What is Hands Across Time?
Created by Todd Goodwin and his students to help kids remember the biggest moments in American history, Hands Across Time has become a beloved tradition for 8th graders at Applewild School in Massachusetts. Throughout the 8th grade year, students dedicate one history class a week to learning the words and gestures, as well as reviewing the people, places, and events referred to in Hands Across Time. By tying together simple phrases and hand motions, students engage both their minds and bodies in the learning process, facilitating retention (and fun!).
At the end of the year, each student is expected to perform the entire timeline of American history, all 20 chapters. Many Applewild alums remember the sequence to this day!
