Nationalism in Europe led to a delicate balance of power based on secret treaties between:
Allies: Britain, France, Russian Empire, Italy, Japan, and others
vs. Central Powers: Germany, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman Empire
USA neutral at first (sympathetic to Allies)
Germany invaded neutral little Belgium
British blockaded Germany/German U-Boats/submarines
Lusitania incident; US citizens killed—US Army
Pres. Wilson re-elected on “He kept us out of war,” but US started to prepare.
Zimmerman note: Germany promised Mexico US land; Mexico helped Germany.
Russian Revolution brought democracy (briefly) to another Ally.
