Post-WWI arms race: battleships
Kellogg-Briand Pact: Tried to outlaw war (but no way to enforce)
US sympathetic to the League of Nations (but never joined)
US busy in and out of Latin America “Good Neighbor Policy”
US a creditor to Europe for WWI debt/Great Depression lowered worldwide trade.
Fascism (totalitarianism) rose in Italy under Mussolini and Germany under Hitler. Militarism in Japan led leaders to seek an Asian Empire.
Aggression in Africa/Asia/Europe/Rome --> Berlin --> Tokyo Axis
(US at first tried to stay neutral) British/French tried appeasement
Then German blitzkrieg over most of Europe – pressure on US increases

After many Allied defeats, US GIs helped turn the tide in N. Africa, Italy, Pacific, Asia, finally “Fortress Europe.”

On the “Home Front” in US, people rationed, saved, worked O.T., bought bonds, hoped, and prayed.
Women did “men’s work” ie Rosie the Riveter
Feeling of national unity? Segregation in the services and still at home.
Japanese-Americans in internment camps
