Big 3 FDR, Churchill, Stalin met during WWII to plan Post War. (4/45 FDR died, Truman took over as president.)
Potsdam ultimatum to Japan: surrender or face destruction.
Aug 1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki destroyed by Atomic Bombs (great debate ever since: was it necessary?)
Japan just about defeated; was USA trying to impress USSR?
USA and USSR emerged from WWII as only 2 Superpowers
USSR developed “Soviet Bloc” vs. USA and its allies despite founding of United Nations (UN) for peacekeeping.
Truman Doctrine: contain the spread of communism
Marshall Plan: US helped rebuild Europe
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) formed/vs. Warsaw Pact
China becomes communist 1949
North Korea invaded South Korea 1950; 3 year “See-Saw” war ends in stalemate.

Finally a ceasefire in 1972.
Nixon began to change the Cold War. He visited (and then recognized) China. Began détente with USSR- continued S.A.L.T. (Strategic Arm Limitation Talk) talks with Soviets.
Pres. Carter boycotted 1980 Moscow Olympics over Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
New Soviet leader Gorbachev: Perestroika “openness” Glasnost “restructure”.
Pres. Reagan strengthened USA and talked to Soviets
1989 Berlin Wall fell/ 1990 Germany reunited, USSR broken.
