Manifest Destiny: the belief that USA had an obvious “God given” right to spread (expand) from sea to shining sea, no matter what/who got in the way!
Economic motives and Nationalism
Major trails west, across the Great Plains to Oregon, California Gold Rush. Santa Fe trail. Mormons to Utah.
Americans into Northern Mexico (Texas). Austin, “Remember the Alamo.”
Sam Houston, First President of “Lone Star Republic”
Statehood NO, then later Yes, led to war with Mexico.
US Generals Zachary Taylor, Winfield Scott.
US invaded Mexico, forced a cession. US ends up with CA, UT, NV, AZ, NM, and the rest of Texas.
Good news for US: gold found in CA. 1848-1849 “49ers”
Big, westward rush.
