Time Frame 1870s --> 1917 Response to Industrialization (Progressive Era)
Workers organize into unions
Industrial unions organized whole industry (automotive, etc)
Previously, unions organized a specific trade, craft or skill
N.L.U.: National Labor Union—Collapsed during a depression
Knights of Labor (strikes as a weapon) fell after Haymarket Riots
A.F. of L.: American Federation of Labor led by Samuel Gompers, weakened by violence and injunctions.
Agricultural specialization --> overproduction-->prices fell -->farmers lost their land
Many migrated to cities, some organized into Grange/Farmers Alliance, led to the Populist Party (“Raise less corn and raise more hell”)
Progressives- Similar to Populists, but more urban. Wanted to :
1. Help poor, 2. End business abuses 3. Attack government corruption
Muckrakers exposed the problems, Reformers fixed/reformed problem
W.E.B. DuBois helped form NAACP
Carrie Chapman Catt (and others) worked for Women’s Suffrage
W.C.T.U.: Women’s Christian Temperance Union; Prohibition
Teddy Roosevelt: Trust-busting/ “Square Deal”
Social reforms under Taft and Wilson
